Lake Havasu City, Arizona was carved out of the western Arizona desert just over 40 years ago by chainsaw and oil magnet, Robert P. McCulloch. When Bob McCulloch first visited the area, only a small combination motel, bar, and bait shop existed on a point of land that jutted in Lake Havasu.

Today, Lake Havasu City is the home to well over 50,000 permanent residents and countless summer and winter visitors, many who own second homes here.

In fact, some estimates put the number of homes and condominiums that are second homes at nearly 25% of the homes in the city!

While over 2.5 million people visit Lake Havasu City every year, the city's economy is not based solely on tourism. Sterlite Plastics has a large manufacturing facility here, as well as several well known boat manufacturers. Numerous small businesses serve clients worldwide.  New home and commercial construction provide thousands of jobs and positions for skilled tradesmen are always available.

Lake Havasu City has been discovered by thousands of families wanting to get their children out of the big city and into more of a small town atmosphere. There are six elementary schools, two middle schools and a high school.  These public schools teach over 6,000 students. In addition, there are several religious oriented and private schools. Mohave Community College, with a campus in Lake Havasu City, is a fully accredited junior college.
More than 700 boys and girls participate in the city soccer and little league programs each year. There are also many athletic leagues for men and women, as well as nearly all of the nationally recognized service clubs.

Lake Havasu City is not a bedroom community, suburb or retirement town. Lake Havasu City is a small city, with a mix of people who have one thing in common: This is where we choose to live, work and play.

Most of the residents moved here from the other states and some from other countries, so that we could enjoy the fine weather, clean air and relaxed, southwest lifestyle....

Here is where Lake Havasu City shines! With 45 mile long Lake Havasu (Havasu means “blue water” in the Chemheuvi Indian Language), Lake Havasu City offers many things to do and you can do most of them year round!

Fishing, boating, water skiing, scuba diving, and sight-seeing on the lake for starters. There are millions of acres of open, public land where you can hike, backpack, horseback ride, four-wheel, and two wheel. And, for every activity, there is at least one club in town and the community college offers courses in many of these areas, too.

The abundance of good weather makes recreational flying another popular activity. Rock hounding, exploring old mines, and even a few ghost towns in the area are fun, too.

Laughlin, Nevada is just 70 miles away if you want to try your luck. The casinos there rival the best that Las Vegas has to offer. You don't even have to drive there. There are free bus trips and several tour companies run large boats up the river to the casinos. Ideal... You won't find a better, year round climate anywhere in the country. Lake Havasu City is located in the Mohave Desert with a typical desert climate. The coldest months, usually January and February, see average temperatures in the mid to high 60's in the day and go down to the upper 40's and low 50's at night.

Summer months are hot. Daytime high range in the area of 100 degrees. But the humidity is low. For much of the summer, the humidity runs under 10%. During the monsoon season, usually the second half of July and most of August, the humidity will climb to 20% to 30%. Also the "monsoon season" is the best chance for rain. And with only an average of 3.5 inches per year, a summer shower is a welcome treat.

Geographically, Lake Havasu City covers over 26 square miles. Compare that with the size of many major cities and you'll see why it seems so uncongested here. There are a number of major US cities that are not much larger than Lake Havasu City but with 10 to 20 times the population!

What About Crime?

Yes, there is crime, but mostly of the petty variety. We are lucky to have a very fine city police department made up of 60 uniformed officers. While that might seem like a rather large force for a small community, remember that Lake Havasu City is the second largest tourist attraction in Arizona with over 3 million visitors per year. Our police department is aided by the Mohave County Sheriff's Department and the State Highway Patrol.
